An easy and incredibly fun way to add energy to a painting is with splatters! Get a big mop brush full of paint and flick your wrist or lightly tap or just sling the paint! There is very little control but all that energy in the quick movement of the brush translates to joy and energy on the page. I love to use a big brush to fling splatter at the end of a painting- especially if it feels like it needs “something”. The color can be diluted and subtle or bold and bright. It’s one of my signature go-to style techniques for backgrounds. For a more subtle approach, use a toothbrush which gives a very fine mist of dots.

Two warnings here- this painting technique is addictive and messy. Be sure to cover anything on your desk (or yourself!) that you don’t want splattered. I’m always amazed at how far those paint drops can fly.
